Turkish Citizenship & Naturalisation
Pathways to Turkish Citizenship
Beyond the investment route, Turkish law provides several pathways for foreign nationals to obtain citizenship. Whether you have married a Turkish citizen, lived in Türkiye for years, or have Turkish ancestry, the naturalisation process involves specific legal requirements, government reviews, and documentation that must be handled carefully.
At Yilmaz Attorneys, we guide foreign nationals through every citizenship pathway — helping you understand your eligibility, prepare your application, and navigate the government process from start to finish.
Citizenship by Marriage
Foreign nationals married to a Turkish citizen may apply for Turkish citizenship after three years of continuous marriage. The key requirements include:
The marriage must be genuine and ongoing — the government conducts interviews and investigations to verify this
The applicant must not have engaged in any activity that is inconsistent with being married
No criminal record or security concerns that would disqualify the application
The applicant must be residing in Türkiye or demonstrate strong ties to the country
We prepare the full application dossier, coordinate document gathering from both Turkish and foreign authorities, and represent clients before the General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs. If the marriage took place abroad, we also handle the recognition and registration of the marriage in Türkiye.
Citizenship Through Residence (General Naturalisation)
Foreign nationals who have resided in Türkiye continuously for five years or more on a valid residence permit may apply for citizenship through general naturalisation. The requirements include:
Five years of uninterrupted legal residence in Türkiye
Sufficient and stable income or financial resources
Basic proficiency in the Turkish language
Good health (no conditions that pose a public health risk)
Good moral character and no serious criminal record
A genuine intention to settle in Türkiye
This is the traditional naturalisation path. The process is longer and more discretionary than citizenship by investment, but it is a viable route for those who have built their lives in Türkiye over time.
Citizenship by Descent and Family Connection
Turkish citizenship law recognises several family-based pathways:
Children born to a Turkish parent — automatically acquire Turkish citizenship regardless of where they are born
Adopted children — a child adopted by a Turkish citizen may acquire citizenship under certain conditions
Reacquisition — former Turkish citizens who lost their citizenship may apply to regain it, often through a simplified process
Exceptional circumstances — the Council of Ministers may grant citizenship to individuals who have provided exceptional service to Türkiye or whose citizenship is deemed to be in the national interest
Dual Citizenship
Türkiye permits dual citizenship. You are not required to renounce your existing nationality when acquiring Turkish citizenship. However, your home country may have its own rules on dual nationality — we advise clients to check their home country's position before applying.
The Application Process
Regardless of the pathway, Turkish citizenship applications follow a similar process:
Eligibility assessment — We review your situation and confirm which pathway applies
Document preparation — We gather, translate, apostille, and certify all required documents from both Turkish and foreign sources
Application submission — The application is filed at the Provincial Directorate of Population and Citizenship or through the e-government system
Government review — Security screenings, interviews, and administrative review by multiple agencies
Decision and oath — Upon approval, the oath ceremony is scheduled and Turkish ID and passport documents are issued
